“The heartfelt counsel of a friend is as sweet as perfume and incense.”
Proverbs 27:9 NLT
We need other people. Just as God designed us to need him, God also made us to need one another. We are created to do life with others, walk together, lean on each other, encourage one another and build each other up. Now more than ever we need one another, to motivate and inspire each other in our faith.
I’m sure I’m not the only one who finds the winter months after Christmas can be lonely. I know I’m not. There’s even a condition known as seasonal affective disorder (SAD) which peaks during these months. Add to that the additional strain of not being able to be with friends and family this year and these next few month are going to be tough.
Although when it’s cold and dark outside it can be tempting to stay in our PJs and curl up on the sofa, away from everyone and everything, It’s so important to take the time to meet together, even if that means finding new ways to do so! The ‘heartfelt counsel of a friend is as sweet as perfume and incense’ – it’s good for the soul.
So grab your favourite hot drink, switch on your laptop, tablet, smartphone and give a trusted friend a call. Sharing with one another and counselling each other is the best antidote to these long winter months.
And most importantly, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Don’t be too proud. It’s not a sign of weakness, it is a sign of maturity. You were created to need others and you are not a burden. Maybe God is teaching you today to be more open to letting others in. You never know.
