Today’s song is “Who You Say I Am” from the Hillsong Worship Album ‘There Is More’. It’s a powerful song that celebrates our identities when we become followers of Christ and the price that Jesus paid for us to be able to walk into that identity.
God knows us intimately, better than we know ourselves. He knows our thoughts, he knows our actions, he knows our words before we even speak them (Psalm 139:2-4). And his plans for us are far superior to our own – more than we could ever dream (Ephesians 3:20) – because he created us and knows us completely.
So, who does God say we are?
Who am I that the Highest King would welcome me (John 14:3)? Who am I that, even when I was lost and rejected him, He would choose to give up His life for mine (Romans 5:8)? Why would he pay such a high price for me, that I may experience abundant life to the full (John 10:10), in freedom from the price of my own sin (Romans 6:23)?
These are such enormous questions and the answer is so great that I don’t believe we will be able to fully grasp it until we are with our creator in heaven. But we can glean some understanding of our identity through reading about it in the bible. It all hinges on us understanding who we are in Christ.
We are “chosen” (John 5:16), part of a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a purchased people (1 Peter 2:9). We are each God’s masterpiece, created anew in Christ Jesus, so that we can do the good things he planned for us since before we were even born. (Ephesians 2:10)
We are never alone, never “forsaken” (Deuteronomy 311:6). The Holy Spirit is always with us, moulding us, shaping us into the people that we were created to be, unveiling our true identities as we become more and more like Jesus (2 Corinthians 3:18).
God is always for us and never against us (Romans 8:31). We are championed by Him, comforted by him, strengthened by him and protected by him as we carry out our calling as ambassadors of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:20). We are greatly loved by a God who never ceases in his pursuit of us and calls us his own (Psalm 139; Romans 1:7; Ephesians 2:4; Colossians 3:12; 1 Thessalonians 1:4)
You are a “child of God”. We hear that phrase over and over again in Church, so often that I think we can start to become numb to the enormity of the meaning of it. WE ARE CHILDREN OF GOD. That can never be taken away from us. While everything around us, and even within us, can change, this will be true forever.

We all have times where insecurity can make us feel as though we aren’t good enough or we’re not able to do all that God has called us to. We begin to doubt, we start to lean on our own strengths, and our self-worth can waver and become unstable.
But when we allow our identity to rest in who we are in God, those fears leave, that insecurity disappears, and that inner voice of doubt no longer has a hold over us.

It’s obvious that God thinks that we’re a pretty big deal. That we were worth dying for. He knows us better than anyone, he sees us, warts and all, and he rejoices over us (Zephaniah 3:17) – the God of the universe sees you as worth rejoicing over!
We are chosen by a God who loves us completely. A God who is desperately seeking a relationship with us. A God who has perfect plans for each of our lives. A God who will never let us down. What an identity we have in him!
Thank you, God, that you love me so completely.
Thank you that my identity is firmly rooted in who you say I am, not who the world says I am.
Help me to let these truths settle in my heart as I seek to understand more about your perfect purpose for my life.
