Love is a Choice

This Saturday just gone we celebrated my husband’s 26th birthday and all things him. And, despite not being able to celebrate in the usual way (dinner out somewhere fancy and maybe a movie) it was so brilliant to spend time together reflecting on another year!

I love my husband massively. Yet marriage, like all relationships, takes work. No matter how big and deep and wide a couple’s love is for each other, things happen. Life happens. We are imperfect and mess up.

But a strong marriage is not taken out by these imperfections and shortcomings. Instead, it’s foundations are strengthened every day by the time spent learning about one another, building one another up and demonstrating our love for each other through our words and our actions.

It takes time, it takes dedication and it isn’t always easy. But it is absolutely worth it.

When something isn’t the way it should be, examine, correct, and resolve to fix it.

Love is a daily choice and is not something that just happens to you. It is a gift you get to give – that’s what makes love so powerful. The strongest relationships are the ones that choose to love regardless of circumstance, when it is not convenient, easy or enjoyable.

And it’s the same with our relationship with God. If you want a strong, good, loving, healthy, thriving relationship with Him you have to build it, starting with a firm foundation. You’ve got to build it brick by brick with every choice and every moment you spend learning about and from Him.

Read your bible daily. Offer everything over to God in prayer. And carve out time to spend together, enjoying each other, and letting Him change you for the better.

And when something isn’t the way it should be, examine, correct, and resolve to fix.

The difference is that, unlike with relationships with people, God doesn’t mess up, abandon us or let us down. It’s only us – because we’re human.

But the promise is that even when we make mistakes, even if we turn away from Him completely, He loves us unconditionally and welcomes us back with open arms. Amen!
