I Know Who I Am: Dare 2019 Song Story

Only 4 more days to go until Dare 2019. Today we look at the song “I know who I am” by singer-song-writer Sinach.

This is such a fun song with enormous amounts of energy, but it also carries an important truth – our identity is set firmly in Jesus.

“I know who God says I am, what he says I am, where he says I’m at, I know who I am” – I Know Who I Am, Sinach

Do you know who you are? Really and truly? Do you know the person you were created to be?

I know sometimes personally I struggle with real insecurity. I sometimes disqualify myself from things because I don’t think I’m good enough. I sometimes miss or even ignore opportunities, God-given opportunities because I think, surely not me. And I’m sure I am not alone in that.

I think if we truly knew our identity in Christ, it would change the way we walk, the way we talk, the way we work, the way we act, the way we view ourselves, the things we speak over ourselves, the way we let others speak to us.

What does God say about who we are?

God says we were each created in his own image, male and female. Our identity is first and foremost as children, sons and daughters of the king of kings, lord of lords, Alpha and Omega, Mighty God (1 John 1:12).

God says we were created for his glory (Isaiah 43:7), a masterpiece (Ephesians 2:10) chosen before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4), loved beyond measure (Ephesians 3:19).

God says we are a royal priesthood, holy and called to demonstrate and reflect God’s excellence, a light in a dark world (1 Peter 2:9), with a glorious inheritance awaiting us (Ephesians 1:11).

Yes, we aren’t perfect, but we are a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17), able to do all things (Philippians 4:13), exceedingly and abundantly above all we can imagine, through the power of Christ who works in us (Ephesians 3:20-21).

With the promise that God will give us not only all that we need. But more than enough, with abundant leftovers to give wherever there is need (2 Corinthians 9:8) according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19).

How incredible is that? How amazing is our identity when we realise who God created us to be? And yet it doesn’t stop there – we are called to live out that identity.

Colossians 1:9-13 says –

“…we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy; giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light…”

We are made righteous – right with God – by the sacrifice of Jesus (Romans 5:1). We are saved by grace. There’s nothing that we can do to qualify ourselves. But we are then called to walk in the ways of God, being holy in all that we do, (1 Peter 1:15-16), increasing in the knowledge of God, stepping out in his power and his might.

Ephesians 1:19-21 urges us, that we will “understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honour at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms. Now he is far above any ruler or authority or power or leader or anything else—not only in this world but also in the world to come.”

Wow! I think if we really understood and accepted all those things about who we are, who we were created to be, the power and the authority that we have been created and redeemed to carry, I don’t know about you but I think that might change something about the way I live every day!

“Take a look at me I’m a wonder.
It doesn’t matter what you see now.
Do you see His glory? I know who I am.” – I Know Who I Am, Sinach

Thank you Father God that you knew me and you loved me before I was even born.
I pray that You would unlock my heart that I might be fully alive to my true identity in You.

Give me clear revelation to see myself the way You see me. Help me to stand in Your truth against all enemy attacks and guard my heart from the lies of the enemy.
